SQUARES and SQUARE  ROOT

Firstly We learn about the square of a number before learning Squares and square root.


SQUARE OF A NUMBER-- If we multiply a Number by itself then the resulting product is the square of the Number.

Example(1)-   

Let we have a number 2 and we want to find the square of 2.

We multiply 2 by itself 2 then we get  2 X 2 = 4 (4 is the resulting product)

So, square of 2 is 4.

Square of 2 is represented as 22.

22 is called- "two to the power two" or "Two raised to the power two".

Example (2)-  

Now, Let we have a number 23.

Then Square of 23 =  23 X 23 = 529 (529 is resulting product).

So, square of 23 is 529.

Square of 23 is represented as 232.

232 is called "twenty three to the power two" or "Twenty Three raised to the power two".

PERFECT SQUARE NUMBER OR SQUARE NUMBER-    A natural number is called a perfect square number or square number if it is the square of some natural number.

Examples-

1)  9 is the square of 3, so 9 is a perfect square number.

2) 144 is the square of 12, so 144 is a perfect square number.

 

SQUARE ROOT OF A NUMBER

Basically Square root is the reverse process of Square.

Square of 5 is 25, Square root of 25 is 5

Symbol of Square root-

 This symbol is the symbol of Square root.

Square root of 100 = \sqrt { 100 } = 10.

Here square of 10 is 100 so 10 is the square root of 100.

but

Square of -10 is what?

Square of -10 = (-10)= (-10) X (-10) = 100.

Important Result-

  • Square root of 100 could be +10 or -10.
  • But when radical symbol √ is used then give only positive(or zero) result.
